Devara Guide: The Thunder Lord of the Clash Lane

Devara Guide: The Thunder Lord of the Clash Lane

Devara has been in Honor of Kings for less than two weeks, and the Clash Lane already feels louder. The newest hero of the Plus 2.0 update throws lightning from range, punches like a brawler up close and, when his ultimate is ready, rises into the sky and lands in the middle of your team as a living storm.

He also looks deceptively simple. Plenty of new Devara players spam their skills, lose every trade and decide the hero is weak. The truth is that his whole kit runs on one rhythm: one skill, one basic attack, repeat. Learn that, and he becomes one of the most stubborn duelists in the lane.

This guide covers how his kit works, the build and arcana players have settled on in these first weeks, the combos to practise and how to play each phase of the match.

⚡ Who Is Devara?

Devara is the Grand Elder of the Azuria Archipelago, a carefree young man who suddenly inherited the memories and thunder of every Devara before him. In-game he is a Fighter who deals mostly magic damage and plays in the Clash Lane. You can unlock him for 13,888 Gold or 588 Tokens.

If you have played the Chinese version of the game, his mechanics will feel very familiar: he is built on the same core as a long-standing thunder fighter from that version, with a new look and golden lightning effects. That also means his playstyle is not a mystery. It has years of testing behind it.

His identity in three points:

  • Every skill empowers his next basic attack with area damage and healing
  • A full energy gauge gives him a bonus cast of a basic skill
  • An ultimate that grants crowd control immunity and lets him fly over walls

📜 Skill Breakdown

Passive – Wish of the Living

From range, Devara’s basic attacks are lightning bolts. When an enemy is close, they turn into faster melee strikes, and each close-range hit grants one stack of Thunder Resolve, up to six. At full stacks, he can cast one of his basic skills a second time.

On top of that, every time he uses a skill, his next basic attack is enhanced: it deals extra magic damage in an area and heals him. Cast two skills back to back and you waste one of those empowered hits. Always slide an attack in between.

Skill 1 – Thunderblaze

Devara dashes forward as a bolt of lightning, dealing magic damage to enemies in his path and gaining a short shield. It is his only mobility skill, so it is both your engage and your escape. Spend it carelessly and you have no way out.

Skill 2 – Divine Judgment

He fires a lightning sphere that explodes after a brief delay when it reaches maximum range or hits an enemy, dealing magic damage and knocking enemies back. The closer the target is to Devara, the further they fly. Used point-blank, it is a fantastic way to peel a diver off you or shove a carry away from their team.

Ultimate – Millennium Echo

Devara answers the echo of his predecessors and rises into the air. During the 1.5-second transformation he ignores terrain, becomes immune to crowd control and gains bonus movement speed, while the golden staff on his back strikes nearby enemies (heroes first). Every strike gives him a shield and a Thunder Resolve stack, and he deals area damage when he lands.

For the next eight seconds his empowered basic attacks reach further, each basic attack grants two stacks instead of one, and his ranged bolts bounce between enemies. This is the window where Devara turns a skirmish upside down.

Skill priority: max Skill 2 first for wave clear and trades, then Skill 1, and level the ultimate whenever you can.

⚔️ Best Devara Build

Because so much of his damage flows through basic attacks, the build players have converged on mixes attack speed with health, rather than pure magic power. Faster attacks mean faster Thunder Resolve stacks, more empowered hits and more healing.

SlotItemWhy
1Boots of DexterityAttack speed early so your gauge fills in every trade
2Sparkforged DaggerThe core item: chain lightning on basic attacks and huge attack speed
3TempestMore attack speed and health, plus stacking speed in long fights
4DoomsdayLifesteal and stronger basic attacks to win extended duels
5Dragon’s RageA big chunk of health and defense so you survive the dive
6Situational defenseOminous Premonition vs physical teams, Succubus Cloak vs magic burst, Frigid Charge vs heavy crowd control

The Magic Alternative

Some players prefer a more traditional caster route built around Sparkforged Dagger and Golden Blade, which keeps enhancing his basic attacks with magic damage, followed by Twilight Stream and Void Staff for penetration. It hits harder in short bursts but leaves you much squishier, so save it for games where your team already has a solid frontline.

🔮 Arcana and Battle Spell

ColorArcanaWhat it gives
RedFate ×10 (or Fate ×8 + Red Moon ×2)Attack speed, health and physical defense
BlueHunt ×10Attack speed and movement speed
GreenBulwark ×10 or Mind’s Eye ×10Extra defense for laning, or magic pierce for more damage

This page stacks attack speed from every color, which is exactly what his passive wants. Take Bulwark into aggressive physical lane opponents and Mind’s Eye when you feel safe enough to chase damage.

Battle spell: Teleport is the popular pick, letting you join fights on the other side of the map the moment your ultimate is ready. Frenzy is a strong alternative if you mostly want to win duels in your own lane.

🔥 Combos You Need to Master

1. The Lane Trade

Skill 2 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Basic Attack

Knock the enemy back, punish them with an empowered hit, dash in for the shield and finish with a second empowered hit. Two skills, two healing attacks, very little risk.

2. The Full-Gauge Duel

Stack six Thunder Resolve on minions ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 2 (bonus cast) ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 1

Only take an all-in when your gauge is full. The bonus cast gives you an extra knockback and an extra empowered hit, which is usually what decides a close duel.

3. The Thunder Drop

Ultimate (from behind a wall or the fog) ➝ land near the enemy backline ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 2 point-blank ➝ Basic Attack

The ultimate makes you immune to crowd control and lets you ignore terrain, so use it to choose your landing spot rather than walking in through the front door.

🌙 Game Plan: Early, Mid and Late

Early Game

Before level 4, treat Skill 1 as your answer to ganks, not as an engage. Use Skill 2 to clear the wave and poke, keep weaving basic attacks and only start a trade when your gauge is full. Winning the lane with Devara is about patience, not flashy plays.

Mid Game

Once you have your first one or two items and your ultimate, the map opens up. Look for river fights and objective skirmishes where you can fly in over a wall. With Teleport you can arrive in a side fight that the enemy thinks is already won.

Late Game

In big teamfights Devara is a semi-frontliner for the eight seconds of his transformation. Open with the ultimate, collect shields on the way down and land close to the squishiest enemies. Do not drop deeper than your support can follow: if you land alone, you will be focused down the moment the ultimate ends.

🛡️ Strengths and Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • Healing on every empowered basic attack makes him great in long trades
  • Crowd control immunity and terrain-free movement on his ultimate
  • A reliable knockback that both peels and engages
  • Bonus skill casts give him extra damage and tempo in duels

❌ Weaknesses

  • Breaking the skill-attack rhythm cuts his damage and healing at the same time
  • Only one dash, so an aggressive engage leaves him without an escape
  • Vulnerable to being locked down before his ultimate is up
  • Struggles against long-range poke that never lets him get close

🎯 Counters and Teammates

Devara hates heroes who can stop him before his ultimate comes online. Heroes with reliable lockdown, such as Donghuang, can shut down his entry, and slippery assassins like Li Bai or Han Xin can kite him around and pick him off when his dash is on cooldown. Against them, keep Skill 1 for defense and wait for them to commit first.

He loves teammates who can set up or protect his dive. A tanky roamer like Zhang Fei keeps him alive in the middle of a fight, and supports such as Dolia, Sun Bin or Dyadia give him the healing, speed or protection he needs to land his full rotation and get back out.

💡 Final Thoughts

Devara is the kind of hero who rewards discipline. Keep the rhythm of skill then attack, only take fights on a full gauge and use your ultimate to pick where the fight happens, not just to deal damage.

He is still brand new, so builds may shift as players find new tricks, but the fundamentals will not change. Master the rhythm now and you will be ready for whatever the Thunder Lord becomes next.
