Li Bai Guide: The Untouchable Sword Poet

Li Bai Guide: The Untouchable Sword Poet

Few heroes in Honor of Kings look as effortless as Li Bai when he is played well. He flashes in from the fog, carves up the enemy carry, vanishes inside a storm of sword strikes and is back in the jungle before anyone can answer.

Played badly, though, he is the jungler who “never gets his ultimate” and dies the moment he steps into a fight. The gap between those two versions is not luck. It is understanding one simple rule: Li Bai’s power comes from being untargetable at the right moment.

This guide breaks down how his kit really works, which build and arcana to run, the combos worth practising and how to plan your game from the first buff to the last teamfight.

🗡️ Who Is Li Bai?

Li Bai is the swordsman poet of Chang’an, a wandering genius who fights with a blade in one hand and a wine gourd in the other. In-game he is a physical assassin who lives in the jungle, and Smite is his battle spell almost every match.

His identity comes down to three things:

  • Huge mobility from a three-part dash that can bring him back to where he started
  • Two separate windows of untargetability that let him dodge key enemy skills
  • Explosive burst on fragile targets once his passive is fully charged

He is not forgiving. His difficulty is rated high almost everywhere, and the hero rewards patience much more than raw aggression.

📜 Skill Breakdown

Passive – Way of the Sword

Every basic attack on an enemy unit (minions, jungle monsters or heroes) gives Li Bai one stack of sword energy. At four stacks he gains bonus physical attack and, more importantly, unlocks his ultimate. The stacks fade after a few seconds without hitting something, so you need to keep attacking while you move.

This is the heart of the hero. If you walk into a fight with zero stacks, you are fighting without your ultimate.

Skill 1 – Stupor Slash

Li Bai dashes in a chosen direction, damaging and briefly stunning enemies along the path, and leaves an afterimage at his starting point. He can dash a second time, and a third cast teleports him back to the afterimage. The follow-up casts must come quickly, so plan your route before you commit.

Each dash also counts toward the passive, which is why Skill 1 is the backbone of almost every combo.

Skill 2 – Stroke of Genius

Li Bai draws a sword circle around himself, damaging nearby enemies and cleansing his own debuffs. He is untargetable during the cast. Enemies who touch the edge of the circle take extra damage, are heavily slowed and have their defense shredded for a short time, which makes every hit afterwards stronger.

Use it to dodge a big skill, not just as damage. That one decision separates good Li Bai players from average ones.

Ultimate – Flickering Flurry

Once the passive is full, Li Bai turns into a phantom and slashes the target area five times, cleansing debuffs and staying untargetable for the whole duration. The damage drops when several enemy heroes stand inside the area, so aim it at an isolated marksman or mage rather than the middle of the enemy team.

⚔️ Best Li Bai Build

Li Bai wants three things from his items: cooldown reduction to cycle his dashes, enough attack to finish squishy targets, and a little bulk or sustain so a single stun does not end him.

SlotItemWhy
1Rapacious BiteJungle item with attack, cooldown reduction and movement speed for fast clears
2Boots of DexterityAttack speed makes it much faster to charge the passive
3Axe of TormentCore item: attack, cooldown reduction and health, built to punish squishies
4BloodweeperLifesteal and attack so you can recover between skirmishes
5Master SwordCrit, health and empowered basic attacks after skills
6Overlord’s MightA massive attack spike and extra damage on low-health targets

Situational Swaps

  • Starbreaker – when the enemy frontline is too tanky for your burst
  • Mortal Punisher – against heavy healing and lifesteal
  • Destiny – negates a fatal hit, great when you keep getting blown up mid-combo
  • Sage’s Sanctuary – a late-game revive when one mistake decides the match
  • Eternity Blade – some players go for a greedier crit setup with Master Sword and Eternity Blade to one-shot backliners, but it leaves you very fragile

A popular late-game trick is to sell your boots for an extra damage item once the passive is easy to charge anyway.

🔮 Arcana and Battle Spell

ColorArcanaWhat it gives
RedMutation ×7 + Red Moon ×3Attack and pierce, plus some attack speed and crit
BlueHunt ×10Attack speed and movement speed
GreenEagle Eye ×10Attack and physical pierce

This page front-loads penetration so your early ganks actually kill, while the attack speed from Hunt and Red Moon helps you reach four passive stacks before the enemy reacts. If you struggle to stay healthy in the jungle, a few Reaver arcana for lifesteal in the blue slot is a common alternative.

Battle spell: Smite. You are the jungler, and Rapacious Bite needs it.

🔥 Combos You Need to Master

1. The Standard Engage

Skill 1 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Ultimate ➝ Skill 1 (return)

Two dashes and two attacks fill the passive, Skill 2 slows and shreds defense, the ultimate finishes, and the third dash takes you home. Practise this until it is automatic.

2. The Bush Ambush

Basic Attack ×2 ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Ultimate

Hide in a bush, wait for a target to walk close, then open with attacks and the sword circle. The defense shred from Skill 2 makes the follow-up ultimate brutal on squishy heroes.

3. The Crowd-Control Dodge

Skill 1 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Ultimate

When you dash in, enemies usually throw their stun straight away. Answer with Skill 2 to become untargetable and cleanse, then dash again and finish.

4. The Long-Range Charge

Stack four attacks on minions or a jungle camp ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Ultimate

Charge your passive out of sight, then cross the distance in two dashes. Be careful: smart enemies wait next to your afterimage, so do not blindly teleport back.

🌙 Game Plan: Early, Mid and Late

Early Game

Start with the blue buff for a faster first clear, then sweep the rest of your jungle. Your first real gank window opens at level 4, when the ultimate becomes available. Look for the side lane with the squishiest carry. If the enemy jungler loves to invade early, do not fight them at your buffs; trade camps on the opposite side instead.

Mid Game

This is Li Bai’s best phase. Use your mobility to pick off anyone who wanders alone, contest the Tyrant and invade when you know where the enemy jungler is. Remember that your afterimage tells the enemy exactly where you will return, so vary your escape routes.

Late Game

Once everyone has defensive items, you can no longer dive five people head-on. Flank from the side, wait for the enemy team to burn their crowd control on your frontline, then go for the backline. Your job is to delete one key target and survive, not to win the fight alone.

🛡️ Strengths and Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • Outstanding mobility for ganks, chases and escapes
  • Two untargetable windows that can dodge game-changing skills
  • Deadly burst against marksmen and mages
  • Strong early jungle clear and invade potential

❌ Weaknesses

  • Needs four passive stacks before his ultimate exists
  • Very fragile if he is stunned outside his untargetable windows
  • Falls off in the late game against tanky, grouped teams
  • The afterimage can be read and punished by experienced opponents

🎯 Counters and Teammates

Li Bai hates heroes who can lock him down the instant he arrives. Mozi is a classic headache because his area control punishes any hero who has to dive into the middle of a fight, and Donghuang can lock him down with his ultimate the moment he dives alone. Against them, hold Skill 2 until their key ability is used, or pick a different target.

On your own team, any hero with reliable crowd control makes Li Bai’s life easier. When a teammate stuns or knocks up the enemy carry, your full combo lands without any risk of being interrupted.

💡 Final Thoughts

Li Bai is not the easiest assassin to learn, but few heroes feel as rewarding once the combos click. Keep your passive charged, treat Skill 2 as a defensive tool first, and always know where your afterimage is.

Master those three habits and you will stop being the jungler who disappears in teamfights and start being the one the enemy team is terrified of.
