Mountains that slow, rivers that drag enemies into them, and an ultimate that lets you fly across the whole Gorge as a ribbon of mist. That is Wang Wei, the newest mage in Honor of Kings, and after a few weeks on the global server it is clear he plays like nobody else in the mid lane.
Wang Wei landed on the global server on October 8, 2026, as part of Season 16. If you have been losing to him or want to add him to your own pool, this guide covers his kit, the builds that work, his combos and how to carry with him from laning to late game.
Who Is Wang Wei?
Wang Wei is a mid-lane mage inspired by the Tang Dynasty poet and painter often called the “Poet Buddha”. In Honor of Kings he is the reclusive master of an academy on Mount Jing, outside Chang’an, and his story ties him to familiar faces such as Wang Zhaojun and Di Renjie.
In the game he is not a one-shot assassin-mage. His strengths are:
- Cheap, fast area damage that clears waves and chips enemies
- Control through slows, a knockback and a pull, rather than hard stuns
- A passive that dodges damage, which makes him slippery in trades
- Map-wide roaming with his ultimate
The trade-off: he is fragile and has no dash of his own outside his ultimate. If an assassin reaches him, he is in trouble.

🌙 Wang Wei Skill Breakdown
Passive – Shifting Mists
Wang Wei gains one mark every few seconds (every 5 seconds early, faster at higher levels). With 5 marks, he dodges the next instance of damage, spending marks according to how big the hit was. The dodge has a cap that grows with level and magical attack, so it blocks a full chunk of poke but not a whole burst combo.
The key detail: standing in his own mountain, or landing with his ultimate, puts him in the Misty Mountain state, which refills marks much faster. Always check your marks before stepping forward. It does not dodge crowd control, only damage.
Skill 1 – Misty Mountain
Wang Wei raises a mountain at a target spot. It hits immediately, slows enemies by 20% for a short moment, keeps dealing damage over 1.5 seconds and then explodes for extra damage. It costs very little mana and has a short cooldown of about 6 seconds, which makes it your main tool for clearing waves and poking.
Skill 2 – Endless River
A stream of water that damages and knocks back the first enemies it hits. After hitting someone, it splits into up to two smaller streams that chase nearby enemies, dealing half damage and a small slow.
The real magic happens when the river touches a Misty Mountain: it circles the mountain, pulls enemies into the center and then detonates it early. That mountain-plus-river collision is the core of the hero.
Ultimate – One With All
Wang Wei sends his spirit out as mist that flies freely across the Gorge for about 9 seconds, ignoring walls and damaging enemies on its path (repeat hits on the same target are reduced). While flying, your skills change:
- Mist Rider (replaces Skill 1): a short burst of speed
- Churning Mists (replaces Skill 2): slows the mist down so you can turn sharply
Recast the ultimate and Wang Wei teleports to the mist, deals big damage on landing and then fires repeated hits at a random enemy nearby for 3 seconds. The catch: until you recast, your real body stays where you started and can still be hit or controlled. The cooldown is long, though it shortens as you level the skill.
⚔️ Best Wang Wei Build
Two directions work well. Pick the burst build when the enemy has fragile carries, and the sustained build when you expect long fights or need to slow down tanky brawlers.
Burst Build
| Slot | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Boots | Boots of Tranquility | Cooldown reduction for more mountains and rivers |
| 1 | Scepter of Reverberation | Skill hits trigger extra explosions, perfect for area spells |
| 2 | Savant’s Wrath | Huge magical attack boost |
| 3 | Void Staff | Magical pierce to keep damage high on tanks |
| 4 | Sage’s Tome | One more big magical attack spike to complete your damage core |
| 5 | Splendor | Temporary invincibility when a diver jumps you |
Sustained Control Build
| Slot | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Boots | Boots of Tranquility | Shorter cooldowns, shorter downtime |
| 1 | Venomous Staff | Cuts enemy healing and helps when you roam to side lanes |
| 2 | Mask of Agony | Boosts your damage over time in long fights |
| 3 | Insatiable Tome | Lifesteal and survivability, so you can use your ultimate more freely |
| 4 | Frozen Breath | Skill hits slow, so enemies struggle to walk out of your zones |
| 5 | Void Staff | Magical pierce for the late game |
Arcana and Battle Spell
- 10 Nightmare – magical attack and pierce
- 10 Tribute – magical attack and cooldown reduction
- 10 Hunt – movement speed for roaming and kiting
If you want more damage, swap Tribute for Mind’s Eye for extra magical pierce.
Battle spell: Flash is the default. Wang Wei has no other escape before his ultimate, and Flash also lets you reposition for a perfect mountain-river angle. Execute is an option if you trust your positioning and want to finish kills after landing.
🔥 Wang Wei Combos
The Pull Combo (Skill 1 → Skill 2)
Your bread-and-butter combo. Place Misty Mountain right on your target, then follow up instantly with Endless River aimed at the same spot. Once the water reaches the peak, nearby enemies get sucked toward the middle and the mountain blows up early, so everyone takes both hits.
The Peel Combo (Skill 2 → Skill 1)
Flip the order when a diver commits onto you. Opening with Endless River shoves them out of range, and a Misty Mountain at their landing spot buys you a second to walk away. The order decides the effect: peak first gathers, water first repels.
The Roaming Combo (Ultimate → Recast → Skill 1 → Skill 2)
Fly the mist toward a fight, use Mist Rider to speed in and Churning Mists to turn through as many different enemies as possible. Recast near the backline, then immediately land Misty Mountain and Endless River on top of the group.
The Chase Combo (Skill 2 → Skill 1 → Ultimate)
Open with river and mountain to win a trade, then fly after the low-health target with your ultimate and recast on top of them to finish the job.
Skill Order
Level the ultimate whenever you can from level 4, max Skill 1 first for faster mountains and more damage, then Skill 2.
🎯 How to Play Wang Wei
Early Game
Your job is to clear waves quickly and reach level 4. Misty Mountain is cheap, so drop it where minions and the enemy mage overlap. Standing inside your own mountain refills your passive faster, which lets you win poke trades. Look for the pull combo when the enemy steps up for last hits.
Mid Game
Once you have your ultimate, watch the minimap constantly. Wang Wei is one of the best mages at answering fights in other lanes, but only if you leave on time. Before you fly, make sure your real body is somewhere safe, such as behind your tower or in a bush your team controls.
Late Game
Hold your position behind your frontline and use mountains to zone chokepoints around objectives. Endless River is your best tool against divers, so don’t waste it on poke when an assassin is missing from the map. Use the ultimate to reposition or flank, not to land in the middle of five enemies.
Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Fast, cheap wave clear and constant poke
- Passive dodge that ruins poke and multi-hit damage
- Strong zone control around towers and objectives
- Global roaming with a long, flexible flight
- Relatively easy core combo for a new hero
❌ Weaknesses
- Fragile, with no dash outside his ultimate
- No stun or launch, only slows, a knockback and a pull
- Ultimate follow-up damage picks a random target in range
- His body is vulnerable while the mist is flying
🛡️ Counters and Synergy
Wang Wei does well against immobile marksmen, who are easy to drag into the mountain-river combo, and against mages whose damage comes in many small hits. Ying Zheng is a good example: Wang Wei can dodge a lot of that damage with his passive, especially while standing in his mountain.
Wang Wei struggles against heroes with one big burst plus crowd control. Daji is the classic problem: one combo can blow through the dodge and lock him down. High-burst assassins who can strip his passive and kill him before he gets his river off are just as dangerous.
Best partners: Guiguzi is a great teammate, because his pull sets up the mountain-river collision almost for free and he helps clear waves early. Any support with strong peel helps too, since Wang Wei has no way to escape on his own before his ultimate.
Final Thoughts
Wang Wei rewards players who think about space more than raw damage. Learn how your casting order changes the result (peak first gathers enemies, water first sends them away), keep an eye on your passive marks and always know where your real body is before you fly.
If you enjoy control mages with a creative twist, Wang Wei is well worth your time.
