Ask a room of Honor of Kings players who decides most ranked games and many will say the jungler. Ask the players who climb consistently, and a surprising number will say the roamer.
Roaming support is the most misunderstood role in the game. Many people treat it as the “easy” pick: follow the marksman, press a shield, collect assists. But the roamer is the only player on the team who does not need gold to matter. That frees you to do what nobody else has time for: control vision, set the tempo and decide where fights happen.
This guide covers the fundamentals of roaming, the mistakes that hold most supports back, and the best support heroes to learn, grouped by playstyle.
🧭 What a Roamer Actually Does
A good roamer is not glued to one lane. Your job breaks down into four responsibilities:
- Vision – checking bushes, watching the river and spotting the enemy jungler before they strike
- Tempo – helping your jungler and mid laner win the early skirmishes and objectives
- Engage – starting fights when your team has the advantage
- Protection – keeping your carries alive when the enemy dives
You will rarely top the damage chart, and that is fine. Your value shows up in the fights your team wins because the enemy walked into you, and in the ganks that never happened because you saw them coming.
⏱️ The Early Game Timeline
The first four minutes decide how much influence you will have later. A typical roaming pattern looks like this:
- Help mid first. Instead of walking straight to the farm lane, help your mid laner clear the opening wave so they reach level 2 first.
- Secure the river. Move into the river bushes next to mid and watch for the enemy jungler. Ping danger early.
- Check on your farm lane. Visit your marksman when the lane needs stability, then leave again once it is safe.
- Prepare the first objectives. Be in position before the Tyrant or Overlord spawns, with the surrounding bushes already checked.
Read the enemy draft before you move. If their jungler loves to invade, stand at your own jungle entrance instead of the lane. If your clash laner is a level-1 bully, a quick visit can win that lane outright.

👁️ Vision: Your Most Valuable Resource
Vision is the hidden currency of every match. When your team pushes a tower, do not stand there hitting it with them. Go stand in the nearest river bush so the enemy cannot jump out and delete your backline.
Before every objective, check the classic ambush spots: the bushes near the mid-lane river, the entrances to the jungle on that side and the area behind the objective pit. Missing one of them is how objectives get stolen.
The golden rule: never face-check a bush with your body if you can avoid it. Use a skill, a projectile or an item effect to test it first. A support who dies checking a bush hands the enemy a free fight.
🛡️ Positioning and Engage Timing
Stand slightly in front of and to the side of your carry, not behind them. From there you can body-block skill shots and react the moment an assassin jumps in. If you stand directly on top of your carry, one area skill can kill you both.
Know which kind of support you are playing:
- Tank supports step forward, absorb crowd control and block the paths enemy divers will use
- Enchanter supports stay behind the carries and keep their buffs and heals flowing
Good moments to start a fight: your team has a numbers advantage, an enemy carry is out of position, the enemy has just used Flash or a key cooldown, or an objective is about to spawn. Bad moments: your teammates are not in range, or you are the only one who can see the target.
Hold your protective skills. Shields, knock-backs and peel abilities are worth far more when an assassin commits than when you throw them out at the start of a fight.
💰 Items and Arcana
Every roamer starts with Knowledge Gem, the roaming item that earns gold and experience without taking farm from teammates. It later turns into one of two aura items:
- Crimson Shadow – an aura that speeds up nearby allies’ attacks and cooldowns, ideal next to a marksman or a skill-based carry
- Guardian – a survivability aura for your team, better against heavy dive
Both offer three active upgrades: Redemption for a group shield, Starspring to restore your teammates’ health and mana, and Radiance, whose Mirror Domain deals area damage and reveals the area, perfect for checking bushes safely.
After that, build for the threat in front of you: Ominous Premonition against physical damage, Succubus Cloak or Longnight Guardian against mages, and Venomous Staff (mages) or Mortal Punisher (fighters) against heavy healing. Boots of Resistance are the standard choice against crowd control-heavy teams.
For arcana, tank supports usually run Harmony, Void and Fate for regeneration, cooldown and bulk, while utility mages lean on Hunt, Void and Nightmare for speed, cooldown and a bit of magic damage.
🏆 The Best Supports to Learn
Tank Supports
- Zhang Fei – the safest pick in the game. Big shields for the team and a beast-form ultimate that controls and knocks back. Fits almost any composition.
- Lian Po – an unstoppable frontliner with layered crowd control. Great when you want to start fights yourself.
- Donghuang – his ultimate suppresses one target and cannot be cleansed. A brilliant answer to slippery carries and assassins.
Enchanters and Healers
- Cai Yan – constant healing and damage reduction, plus a bouncing skill that punishes divers. Very forgiving for new support players.
- Sun Bin – speed boosts, heals and a silence on his ultimate. Save his healing skill until teammates have lost a chunk of health for the biggest value.
- Dolia – her rare ability to reset a teammate’s ultimate can turn a teamfight on its own.
- Dyadia – strong lane harassment, healing and mobility.

Utility and Playmakers
- Mozi – long-lasting area control from his ultimate and easy poke. A great way to learn teamfight zoning.
- Da Qiao – teleports and recalls for the whole team. Incredible in coordinated groups, harder in solo queue.
- Guiguzi – stealth engages that pull enemies together. Before going invisible, make sure the enemy does not already have vision of you.
- Yao – attaches to a carry and keeps them alive. Best when your team has one clear win condition.
If you are new to the role, start with Zhang Fei or Cai Yan. Both are forgiving and teach you positioning without punishing every mistake.
❌ Common Roaming Mistakes
- Taking farm. Your team wins when the jungler and carries are rich. Do not last-hit minions or steal jungle camps.
- Engaging alone. Starting a fight when teammates are out of range only gets you killed.
- Splitting off late. In the late game, a support caught alone can cost the match. Move with your team and check vision together.
- Pushing side lanes. Unless your hero has global presence, leave split-pushing to others.
- Chasing low-health enemies. Running after a kill leaves your carries exposed to the assassins you were meant to stop.
💡 Final Thoughts
Roaming is the role where game sense matters more than mechanics. You do not need the fastest hands; you need to know where the enemy jungler is, when your team is ready and which teammate needs you next.
Help early, control vision, hold your key skills for the right moment and never take your carries’ gold. Do that consistently and you will discover that the “easy” role is the one that quietly wins the most games.
