Marco Polo Guide: Master the Run-and-Gun Marksman

Marco Polo Guide: Master the Run-and-Gun Marksman

Most marksmen in Honor of Kings want to plant their feet in the back line and shoot. Marco Polo refuses to stand still. He fires his revolvers on the run, blinks through fights, shreds armour into true damage and, when everything lines up, drops into the middle of the enemy team and spins out a storm of bullets that hits everyone around him.

He is one of the most stylish heroes in the game and also one of the most punishing. A good Marco feels untouchable. A careless one spends his ultimate in the wrong place, gets stunned and watches his team lose the fight without him.

This guide covers his kit, his build, his arcana, the combos you need and how to play every stage of the match.

🔫 Who Is Marco Polo?

Marco Polo is the travelling gunslinger from the far west, a charming adventurer who crossed the world in search of new lands and new stories. In-game he is a physical Marksman who usually plays in the Farm Lane.

What sets him apart from other marksmen:

  • His main damage skill lets him keep moving while he fires
  • Two blinks, one on Skill 2 and one on his ultimate
  • A passive that turns his hits into true damage, so tanks cannot simply stack armour against him
  • A close-range ultimate that rewards brave, well-timed engages

📜 Skill Breakdown

Passive – Chain Reaction

Every hit from Marco’s basic attacks and skills puts a stack of Destruction on the target (minions take several stacks per hit). At ten stacks, the target’s defences break for five seconds: every one of Marco’s basic attacks and skill hits deals bonus true damage on top, and that bonus can even critically strike. Reaching ten stacks also refunds some of his energy.

His skills also carry part of his basic attack effects, which is why on-hit items work so well on him.

Skill 1 – Resplendent Revolver

Marco fires a stream of bullets in a straight line while gaining movement speed, so he can kite and shoot at the same time. Each bullet hits the first enemy in its path and restores a little energy. It is your farming tool, your poke and the fastest way to build passive stacks. Watch out: minions and jungle monsters block the bullets, so look for clean angles on enemy heroes.

Skill 2 – Roaming Gun

A quick blink in your chosen direction, perfect for dodging skills or repositioning. Its passive is just as important: whenever enemy heroes are close to Marco, he gains movement speed and deals extra damage. That bonus is what makes him so dangerous in short-range brawls.

Ultimate – Fevered Barrage

Marco blinks to a target location and unleashes wave after wave of bullets at every enemy around him. Combined with broken defences from his passive, it can melt an entire team in seconds. The catch: you are almost stationary while the barrage fires, and any hard crowd control cancels it. Before you press it, always ask yourself one question: who on the enemy team can still stun me?

Skill priority: max Skill 1 first, then Skill 2, and level the ultimate whenever possible. Attack speed boosts the firepower of both his revolver and his ultimate, which is why every serious build stacks it.

⚔️ Best Marco Polo Build

Marco needs attack speed to fire faster, on-hit effects to make every bullet count and enough defence to survive the moment he dives in with his ultimate.

SlotItemWhy
1Boots of DexterityEarly attack speed for faster stacks and smoother farming
2Sparkforged DaggerChain lightning and attack speed, great for wave clear and poke
3DoomsdayAttack speed, lifesteal and bonus damage based on the target’s health
4Daybreaker’s VirtueAttack, crit and penetration, a huge spike for a ranged hero
5Pure SkyAttack, defence and cooldown reduction, plus temporary damage reduction when a fight turns against you
6Succubus CloakMagic defence and a shield against burst mages

Situational Swaps

  • Destiny – negates a fatal hit, ideal when you dive in with your ultimate and the enemy still has damage left
  • Frigid Charge – physical defence and a shield whenever you are hit by hard crowd control
  • Shadow Ripper – a greedier damage option when the enemy team is squishy
  • Axe of Torment – some players run a semi-bruiser build with it when they want to brawl at close range

🔮 Arcana and Battle Spell

ColorArcanaWhat it gives
RedRed Moon ×10Attack speed and crit rate
BlueHunt ×10Attack speed and movement speed
GreenEagle Eye ×10Physical attack and physical pierce

This is the standard page for good reason: two colors of pure attack speed plus pierce for his early trades. If you keep getting killed in lane, a few Reaver arcana for lifesteal is a common alternative in the blue slot.

Battle spell: Flash is the safest choice. Purify is a strong option against teams built around stuns, because it lets you finish your barrage after being locked down. Some players also take Stun to hold a target inside the ultimate.

🔥 Combos You Need to Master

1. The Poke and Kite

Skill 1 ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Basic Attack

Fire your revolver to build stacks, blink to a better angle so more bullets connect, then finish with basic attacks to cash in on the true damage.

2. The Barrage Dive

Skill 1 to stack the passive ➝ Skill 2 to close in ➝ Ultimate

Only go for it once your targets are around half of their stacks or their crowd control has been used. The barrage then breaks their defences almost instantly and every bullet afterwards hits with true damage.

3. The Double Escape

Skill 2 ➝ Ultimate blink

When an assassin jumps on you, two blinks in a row can carry you over walls and far out of reach. Do not be afraid to cancel the barrage early if staying means dying.

🌙 Game Plan: Early, Mid and Late

Early Game

Farming is the whole job until your first attack speed item. Skill 1 clears minions and, when the bullets carry through to your lane opponent, gives you free poke. Skill 2 lets you last-hit a step further forward than most marksmen, but if you burn it aggressively you have no escape for the next few seconds.

Mid Game

Once your second item is done, your passive triggers in every fight. Show up for the Tyrant and mid-lane skirmishes, keep firing Skill 1 into the brawl to stack the enemy frontline and always keep at least one blink in reserve.

Late Game

Patience is everything. Poke from the edge of the fight, moving in an arc around it so you are hard to target. Wait for your tank or fighter to draw the enemy’s crowd control. When their stuns are gone, blink in and unleash the barrage on the clump of enemies around the Overlord. A perfectly timed ultimate wins the game on its own.

🛡️ Strengths and Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • True damage that keeps him relevant against tanky frontlines
  • Two blinks for both chasing and escaping
  • Can shoot while moving, making him a great kiter
  • Devastating area damage from his ultimate in grouped fights

❌ Weaknesses

  • Weak until his attack speed items come online
  • Almost stationary during his ultimate, and one hard stun cancels it
  • Skill 1 can be blocked by minions
  • Very little burst if the enemy denies him firing time

🎯 Counters and Teammates

Marco loves fighting heroes he can kite. Big bruisers like Lu Bu who need to stick to their target struggle against his blinks and true damage, and even a lockdown specialist like Donghuang can be kept at a distance and worn down with Skill 1.

His biggest threats are heroes who can interrupt him or hit him from very long range. Mulan can silence him and knock him around before he finishes his ultimate, and Gan & Mo can punish him with long-range sword strikes before he ever gets close enough to shoot. Thick crowd-control tanks such as Lian Po can also lock him down in the middle of his barrage.

On your own team, look for frontliners who keep enemies grouped and occupied. Zhang Fei shields his allies and disrupts the enemy frontline with his transformation, while Wuyan can hold enemies in place right where your bullets are flying. Supports that grant crowd control immunity are also a dream pairing, since they let him finish the barrage without being interrupted.

💡 Final Thoughts

Marco Polo is the marksman for players who hate standing still. Keep moving, keep firing, stack your passive before every big play and never use your ultimate while the enemy still has a stun in hand.

Master that rhythm and you will understand why so many players call him the most fun gunslinger in the game.
