Lam does not fight fair, and he is not supposed to. He slips under the surface of the river, glides across the map faster than anyone can track, then bursts out to drag a wounded enemy straight into his team. Anyone below a third of their health becomes his prey.
That predator mindset is why Lam has long been a favourite jungle pick. But he is not a hero you can simply mash buttons on. His power comes from reading health bars, choosing the right moment to surface, and knowing when to walk away.
Here is everything you need to play Lam well: how his kit works, the build and arcana, the combos and a full game plan.
🦈 Who Is Lam?
In the lore, Lam is an outcast who was abandoned by his own people, found among the ruins of a battlefield and trained into one of a warlord’s deadliest secret assassins. A mission to kill a kind-hearted young woman changed him: he left that life behind and now strikes only at those he believes deserve it.
In-game he is a physical assassin built for the jungle, with Smite as his battle spell. His identity:
- A dive mode that gives him huge movement speed and lets him travel unseen through the river
- Bonus true damage against any enemy below 30% health
- Healing and chasing dashes built into his main damage skill
- An ultimate that pulls enemies with him, perfect for catching a target and delivering it to your team
📜 Skill Breakdown
Passive – Hunter
Any enemy below 30% health is marked as prey. Lam’s skills and basic attacks deal bonus true damage to prey. The practical lesson: train your eyes on that 30% line. A target who looks safe at a third of their health is actually in kill range.
Skill 1 – Wavebreaker
Lam wraps himself in water and enters a Submerge state for a few seconds, gaining a lot of movement speed. When the dive ends naturally, he surfaces and gets half of the cooldown back. Cast it again while submerged and he leaps out with a strike that deals heavy physical damage and slows the target.
Inside the river, the dive has no time limit, which turns it into a perfect ambush and rotation tool.
Skill 2 – Space Split
Lam slashes a nearby enemy twice. Casting it gives him one mark, and every different enemy he hits adds another, up to three. Each hit also heals him (less against minions and monsters).
Marks are spent on basic attacks: every empowered attack makes Lam dash to his target, and each follow-up shortens Skill 2’s cooldown. This loop of slash, dash, slash, dash is where his sustained damage and sustain come from. Using Skill 2 while submerged also gives back part of Skill 1’s cooldown.
Ultimate – Death From Below
Lam throws a dagger forward, briefly slowing enemies in its path. After a short delay he dashes to the dagger, interrupts enemy channels and drags every enemy along the way to the end point for a heavy execution strike.
Cast it while submerged and Lam skips the dagger and dashes straight away, which is much harder to react to. That is the signature Lam play: dive in, pull the enemy carry back toward your team, finish them.

⚔️ Best Lam Build
Lam needs cooldown reduction to keep his dive and slash loop running, enough bulk to survive in the middle of the enemy team, and a finisher’s damage spike.
| Slot | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rapacious Bite | Jungle item with attack, cooldown reduction and movement speed |
| 2 | Boots of Resistance | Shorter crowd control, your biggest enemy |
| 3 | Axe of Torment | Core item: attack, cooldown reduction, health and pierce |
| 4 | Pure Sky | Attack, defense, cooldown reduction and temporary damage reduction |
| 5 | Cuirass of Savagery | Defense and extra damage the longer you stay in the fight |
| 6 | Overlord’s Might | Big attack boost and extra damage on low-health targets |
Situational Swaps
- Boots of Tranquility – if the enemy has little crowd control and you want to spam skills even faster
- Ominous Premonition and Demonsbane – when the enemy brings two or more magic damage heroes, or attack-speed carries
- Starbreaker – against a tanky frontline
- Spikemail – when physical attackers keep focusing you
- Destiny or Sage’s Sanctuary – late-game insurance for the fights that decide the match
🔮 Arcana and Battle Spell
| Color | Arcana | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Mutation ×9 + Red Moon ×1 | Physical attack and pierce |
| Blue | Stealth ×10 | Physical attack and movement speed |
| Green | Eagle Eye ×10 | Physical attack and pierce |
This page stacks raw damage and pierce for fast clears and lethal ganks. Common alternatives in the blue slot are Hunt for more speed, or Reaver for lifesteal if you are struggling to stay healthy.
Battle spell: Smite.
🔥 Combos You Need to Master
1. Basic Trade – Skill 1 (recast) ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Basic Attack ×2
Lam’s early damage is modest, so make sure the leap-out strike from Skill 1 actually lands for its damage and slow, then use Skill 2 to collect marks and dash with your empowered attacks.
2. The Execution – Skill 1 ➝ Ultimate ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Basic Attack ×2
Dive first, then cast the ultimate straight from the water. It skips the dagger wind-up and catches a fleeing low-health target before they can react. Follow up with Skill 2 and your mark dashes to secure the kill.
3. The Kidnap – Skill 1 ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Ultimate ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Basic Attack ×2
Lam’s main teamfight combo. Build marks with your first two skills, slip past the target, then use the ultimate to drag them back toward your team. Finish with another Skill 2 and empowered attacks.
Pre-Fight Tip
Before a fight starts, use Skill 2 on nearby jungle monsters to bank all three marks. You walk into the fight with your dashes already loaded.

🌙 Game Plan: Early, Mid and Late
Early Game
Use dive mode to cut travel time between camps and reach level 4 quickly. Skill 2’s healing lets you clear a lot without going back to base. Once your ultimate is ready, look for lanes where the enemy is already chipped: anyone close to 30% health is a free kill with your passive.
Mid Game
Lam owns the river in the mid game. With no time limit underwater there, you can sit next to objectives, move between lanes unseen and ambush anyone who walks through. Your dream opening at the Tyrant or Overlord is pulling the enemy jungler or carry into your team before the fight even starts.
Late Game
Lam is not your team’s first engage. Circle the fight in dive mode, wait for the enemy to spend their crowd control on your frontline, then pull out their squishiest member. Cycle Skill 2 and empowered attacks, heal through the chaos and execute targets one by one as they drop under 30%. If a chase would leave you alone against three, dive out and wait for the next victim.
🛡️ Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Fantastic map mobility and river control thanks to dive mode
- True damage makes wounded targets almost impossible to save
- Healing on Skill 2 lets him survive extended fights
- The pulling ultimate is one of the best pick tools in the jungle
❌ Weaknesses
- Missing the ultimate can strand him alone inside the enemy team
- Hard crowd control breaks his dash chain, and he melts quickly once stopped
- Juggling dive mode, marks and empowered attacks is demanding
- Needs gold and kills to reach his strongest item spikes
🎯 Counters and Teammates
Lam’s nightmare is reliable lockdown that lands the moment he surfaces. Heroes with point-and-click control, like Donghuang‘s ultimate, or teams that stay grouped and peel for each other, leave him nothing to hunt. Against them, be patient and wait for the control to be used.
The best teammates for Lam are lane partners and supports who chip enemies down or hold them in place. Anyone with good poke pushes targets toward the 30% line, and a frontliner who can catch the enemy you have just dragged back turns every pull into a kill.
💡 Final Thoughts
Lam is a hunter, not a brawler. Dive to move, slash to stay healthy, pull to isolate, and always keep an eye on that 30% health line.
Play him with patience and he will make the river the most dangerous place on the map.
