Most mages want to stay as far from the enemy as possible. Gao wants the opposite. He grabs his guitar, dashes into the middle of the enemy team and plays a five-second concert that gets tougher the more enemies are standing around him.
That makes him one of the strangest and most fun mid-laners in Honor of Kings. He looks like a squishy caster, but in teamfights he behaves almost like a frontliner with a speaker system. Play him like a normal backline mage and you will wonder why everyone calls him strong. Play him like a rock star who owns the stage, and fights start to collapse around you.
This guide covers his skills, the build and arcana that keep him alive inside the chaos, the combos to practise and a full game plan from lane to late game.
🎸 Who Is Gao?
Gao is the rebel bard of the Honor of Kings world, a wandering musician who turns sound into magic. He is a mage who plays in the mid lane, built around area damage rather than single-target burst.
His identity comes down to three things:
- Bouncing notes that clear waves and chip the enemy laner from safety
- A healing dash that can be used twice, rare mobility for a mage
- An ultimate that deals damage around him and grants damage reduction for every nearby enemy hero
He is at his best when the enemy team clumps up. Against spread-out, poke-heavy teams, he has to be more patient.
📜 Skill Breakdown
Passive – Guitar Solo
Every basic attack and every skill counts as one “performance”. After three performances, Gao’s next basic attack becomes a powerful energy chord that travels in a line and deals magic damage to every enemy in its path. It passes through minions, so it is excellent for hitting the enemy laner behind their wave.
Skill 1 – Wild Chord
Gao plays a burst of notes at up to two enemies in range. Each note can bounce to nearby enemies a couple of times, which makes it great for wave clear and poke. The catch: when several notes hit the same target, the extra hits deal much less damage, so this is not a single-target nuke.
Skill 2 – String Bender
Gao dashes in a chosen direction while slamming his strings, damaging and slowing nearby enemies. He heals for every enemy hero hit (half as much for minions and monsters), takes reduced damage and is immune to slows during the dash. The key detail: casting Wild Chord during the dash lets you dash a second time, which you can use to go deeper or to escape.
Ultimate – Rock Out!
Gao starts a five-second performance, dealing magic damage around him every half second. He gets a burst of movement speed that fades over the first few seconds, and he gains damage reduction while enemy heroes are close, with more reduction for every extra enemy nearby. The deeper you are in the fight, the longer you survive.

⚔️ Best Gao Build
Gao needs to survive inside the enemy team for five seconds. That means his build mixes magic power with lifesteal and one or two items that keep him alive when he is focused.
| Slot | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Insatiable Tome | Magic lifesteal and health, so the ultimate heals you while you play |
| 2 | Boots of Resistance | Shorter crowd control, so a single stun does not end the concert |
| 3 | Savant’s Wrath | A huge boost to magic attack for your area damage |
| 4 | Splendor | Temporary invincibility to wait out burst when the enemy dives you |
| 5 | Mask of Agony | Extra skill damage and health for long fights |
| 6 | Void Staff | Magic pierce for the late game, when everyone builds defense |
Situational Swaps
- Boots of the Arcane – instead of Boots of Resistance when you are ahead and want more damage
- Ardent Dominion – cleanses crowd control and shields you when your health drops low
- Augur’s Word or Breakthrough Robe – a semi-tank route when the enemy team targets you first
- Twilight Stream – more health and magic pierce that stacks while you keep hitting heroes
- Staves of Sorcery – adds magic damage to your basic attacks, pairs well with the passive chord
🔮 Arcana and Battle Spell
| Arcana | What it gives |
|---|---|
| Nightmare ×10 | Magic attack and magic pierce for early damage |
| Hunt ×10 | Movement speed and attack speed, so you reach the passive chord faster |
| Mind’s Eye ×10 | Magic pierce and attack speed |
This page front-loads damage and makes every basic attack count. If you keep getting bullied in lane, swapping the blue page for a magic lifesteal option is a common way to stay healthy.
Battle spell: Flash. It gives you a surprise angle for the ultimate and a way out when the concert goes wrong. Heal is an option if you are struggling against heavy early pressure.
🔥 Combos You Need to Master
1. The Lane Poke
Skill 1 on the minion wave ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Basic Attack ➝ energy chord through the wave
Let the notes bounce from the minions to the enemy laner, then finish with the passive chord that pierces through the wave. Make a habit of ending every wave clear with a basic attack so your chord is always ready.
2. The Double Dash Entry
Skill 2 ➝ Skill 1 (second dash) ➝ Ultimate ➝ Basic Attacks
Use the first dash to close distance, recast during it with Wild Chord to land right in the middle of the enemy team, then start the ultimate on arrival. Everyone around you takes damage, and you take less with each extra enemy nearby.
3. The Classic Concert
Ultimate ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Basic Attack ➝ Skill 1
Start the performance from just outside the fight and use the movement speed to run in. Slow them with the dash, weave in attacks to trigger the passive, and finish with Wild Chord. Do this only after the enemy has used their main crowd control on your frontline.

🌙 Game Plan: Early, Mid and Late
Early Game
Before level 4, String Bender is your only escape, so do not force trades. Clear waves with Wild Chord, poke with the chord and save the dash. When you do use it, angle it to hit the enemy laner, because hitting heroes heals you much more than hitting minions.
Mid Game
The moment the ultimate unlocks, Gao becomes a different hero. Rotate with your jungler to the Tyrant and Overlord, wait behind your frontline and dash in the instant the enemy clumps together. Fights around narrow river entrances are perfect for your bouncing notes.
Late Game
When the ultimate is on cooldown, you are just a squishy mage with a healing dash. Stay back, poke and wait. Watch for the enemy’s key stun or suppression, and only commit once it has been used. A full five-second concert in the middle of three enemies can decide the game.
🛡️ Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Massive area damage in clumped teamfights
- Damage reduction that grows with every nearby enemy
- A healing double dash, unusual mobility for a mage
- Safe wave clear and poke with bouncing notes and the piercing chord
❌ Weaknesses
- Weak single-target burst
- Very ordinary while the ultimate is on cooldown
- One well-timed stun or suppression can end the concert
- Has to walk into danger to deal full damage
🎯 Counters and Teammates
Gao’s natural enemies are heroes who can lock him down the second he arrives. Donghuang and Liang both have suppression ultimates that shut off your performance instantly. When one of them is in the enemy draft, hold your ultimate until you have seen where their lockdown goes.
On your own team, Gao loves tanks and warriors who start fights and soak crowd control. Once the enemy has wasted their stuns on your frontline, you can walk in and play the whole song. A support who can group enemies together with knock-ups or pulls makes your ultimate even more devastating.
💡 Final Thoughts
Gao is not a mage for players who like hiding at the back. He rewards confidence, timing and a good read of the enemy’s crowd control.
Clear waves safely, save String Bender, and wait for the moment the enemy team bunches up. Then dash in, start the concert and make them listen until the very last note.
