Most mages in Honor of Kings stand at the back and wait for the fight to come to them. Kongming does not wait. He blinks into range, peppers his target with arcane orbs, fires a homing bomb at whoever is low and, if it kills, does it all over again a few seconds later.
That reset loop is what makes him one of the most feared mid laners in the game. It is also what makes him tricky: if you mistime the blink or fire the ultimate at the wrong target, you are just a squishy mage standing in the wrong place.
This guide explains how Kongming’s kit fits together, which builds and arcana to use, the combos to practise and how to turn a clean lane into a mid-game snowball.
🌌 Who Is Kongming?
Kongming is the genius strategist of the Jixia Academy, a scholar who treats every battle as a puzzle he has already solved. In-game he is a mage best known in the mid lane, although some players also take him into the jungle.
Think of him as a mage-assassin rather than a classic artillery caster:
- Two charges of a short blink that deals damage where he leaves and where he lands
- A passive that turns into five auto-attacking orbs once he lands enough skills
- An execute-style ultimate that refunds most of its cooldown on a kill
His strongest window is the mid game, from the moment his ultimate comes online until the enemy team starts stacking magic defense.
📜 Skill Breakdown
Passive – Time for Tactics
Every time one of Kongming’s skills hits an enemy, he gains a mark. At five marks he summons five arcane orbs that circle him and automatically strike nearby enemies, prioritising heroes. They deal reduced damage to jungle monsters and extra damage to minions.
Your burst depends on reaching five marks quickly, so plan every trade around stacking them. You can also pre-charge the passive on minions or monsters just before a fight, then walk in with the orbs already active.
Skill 1 – Arcane Assault
Kongming fires three orbs in a fan in the chosen direction. Each orb that hits adds a mark, but extra orbs that hit the same target deal much less damage. The skill stores up to two charges.
The trick is distance. From far away you will usually land one or two orbs. From one or two body lengths away, all three can hit, which almost fills the passive in one cast.
Skill 2 – Time Shift
Kongming blinks in the chosen direction, leaving a damaging field at both the starting point and the destination. An enemy hit by these fields twice within a few seconds is massively slowed. Like Skill 1, it stores two charges.
The blink cannot be blocked by terrain or units, so it doubles as a dodge. Its real reach is a little longer than it looks, and you do not need to blink right on top of an enemy: clipping them with the edge of the field is enough to count the hit.
Ultimate – Winning Strategy
After a short charge, Kongming launches a homing energy bomb at a locked target. The damage grows with the target’s missing health, so a target below half health takes far more than the tooltip suggests.
If the bomb kills, the passive triggers instantly and the ultimate’s cooldown drops by 80%, ready for the next victim. The catch: the bomb can be body-blocked by any enemy hero standing in the way, who takes the hit instead.

⚔️ Best Kongming Build
Kongming wants early magical pierce, sustain to survive his short range, and a way to dodge the burst that comes his way after every dive.
| Slot | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Boots of the Arcane | Early magical pierce that makes your first trades hurt |
| 2 | Insatiable Tome | Magical lifesteal, so you can stay in lane after short-range trades |
| 3 | Scepter of Reverberation | Skill hits trigger extra explosions, plus movement speed |
| 4 | Savant’s Wrath | A massive magical attack boost |
| 5 | Void Staff | Pierce against heroes who stack magic defense |
| 6 | Splendor | A brief invincibility to dodge burst after you dive |
Safer Variant
If the enemy has a lot of burst or crowd control, swap the boots for Boots of Resistance and pick up Ardent Dominion, which shields you and clears crowd control when your health drops low. Mask of Agony is a good middle ground between damage and health.
Situational Picks
- Venomous Staff – against heavy healing or lifesteal
- Sage’s Tome – instead of Void Staff when the enemy team has little magic defense
- Splendor or Ardent Dominion first – when you are facing two or more assassins
🔮 Arcana and Battle Spell
| Color | Arcana | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Nightmare ×10 | Magical attack and magical pierce |
| Blue | Hunt ×10 | Movement speed and attack speed |
| Green | Mind’s Eye ×10 | Magical pierce and attack speed |
Nightmare and Mind’s Eye front-load pierce for early kills, while Hunt’s movement speed makes up for Kongming’s short legs between blinks.
Battle spell: Flash is the standard choice and opens up long-range combos. Purify is a solid alternative when the enemy has a lot of point-and-click crowd control.
🔥 Combos You Need to Master
1. The Basic Burst – Skill 2 ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Ultimate
Blink in close, fire Skill 1 point-blank so all three orbs land, and the passive is ready. Finish with the ultimate. If the target is still too healthy, add one more skill before the bomb.
2. The Long-Range Gank – Skill 2 ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Skill 2 ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Ultimate
Both basic skills have two charges, so you can chain them to cover a lot of ground while stacking marks all the way in. Great for catching someone who thinks they are out of range.
3. The Kite – Skill 2 ➝ Skill 1 ➝ Skill 2 (away) ➝ Ultimate
Blink in, fire, then blink back out. The field you leave behind still damages and slows anyone chasing you, and the ultimate punishes them for following.
4. The Animation Cancel
Skill 1 has a noticeable recovery after the cast. Use Skill 2 right after it to cancel that delay, which makes your burst faster and much harder to react to. Flash can also change Skill 1’s angle mid-combo for a surprise hit.

🌙 Game Plan: Early, Mid and Late
Early Game
Your goal before level 4 is simple: farm cleanly and do not die. Fire Skill 1 into the minion wave so it also catches the enemy mid laner, and let your passive orbs chip at them when they walk up for a last hit. Always keep one Skill 2 charge in reserve as your escape from the enemy jungler.
Mid Game
This is Kongming’s best phase. Once the ultimate is online, push the wave and roam, especially toward the farm lane, where the enemy marksman is a perfect ultimate target. Join fights at the Tyrant, poke from the edge with Skill 1, and hunt anyone below half health. Every kill resets your ultimate, so one good fight can turn into a chain of pickoffs.
Late Game
Late-game Kongming needs patience. The enemy walks in tight groups and stacks magic defense, so a careless blink just feeds their crowd control. Orbit the fight, keep marks up with Skill 1, and wait for the enemy to spend their lockdown on your frontline. When someone drops low, blink to a clean angle so nobody can body-block the bomb, and fire.
🛡️ Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Two blink charges for angles, chases and escapes
- Ultimate resets on kills, making him a brilliant cleaner in teamfights
- Strong lane pressure once his orbs are up
- Can snowball a whole game from one good mid-game fight
❌ Weaknesses
- Short range for a mage, so he must put himself in danger to deal damage
- Very fragile once both blink charges are spent
- His damage drops sharply when his skills miss and the marks fall off
- The ultimate can be body-blocked by tanks and supports
🎯 Counters and Teammates
Kongming struggles against heroes who can jump him the moment he blinks in. Burst fighters such as Mulan and stealthy assassins can delete him before he finishes a combo. Teams with heavy point-and-click control, or a frontline that loves to stand between him and his target, such as Dun or Donghuang, also make his ultimate much less reliable.
On the other hand, he loves picking on slow heroes without dashes, such as Luban No.7. Teammates like Zilong, or any frontliner who can absorb attention and land slows or crowd control, give him the space he needs to stack his marks safely.
💡 Final Thoughts
Kongming rewards players who think one step ahead: stack the marks, keep a blink for the exit, and only fire the bomb when you know it will kill. Do that, and every teamfight becomes a chance to chain resets and wipe the enemy backline on your own.
He takes time to learn, but few mid laners feel as satisfying when the combos finally click.
